One of the last things I did before we closeted ourselves at home was a trip to the local nursery to get some seeds and some seedlings. The weather has been wet and cool so I figured the seedlings could wait a couple days without drying out before we got to them.
I thought I had a big bag of potting soil in the garage but I didn't. Fortunately I did have a large pot full of soil and a lot of little pots. The project was more fun for the kids and killed much more time by having to transfer the soil than me dumping the dirt into the pots so it worked out nicely.
So, here was the project.
- Place stones in the bottoms of several pots to add some drainage and keep the dirt from coming out the holes in the bottoms of the pots. Looking for rocks the right size in the yard was lots of fun.
- Transfer dirt from the big pot to the little pots. I gave the kids some tiny shovels and they loved this part. It was very messy but they enjoyed it.
- Planting the strawberries. I have no pictures of this part as I was trying very hard to keep the plants from getting destroyed. Flynt is a little young and rough for this part but he really enjoyed it and the plants look only a little battered
- Cleaning up the mess after the project was done. The kids loved trying to help me sweep up the mess. The whole project was a little more difficult than planned due to an unexpected rainstorm but this step was particularly challenging. Ultimately, Flynt slipped on the deck and was very unhappy so we called it a day and went inside.
Bonus: the added benefit of this type of project is we need to water and check the strawberries every day which is a pleasant little use of time every day and also teaches maintenance and patience.
