Social Distancing Day 1: finger painting with shaving cream

Today was day 1 of trying to keep everyone isolated and still have some fun.  The big time sinks of the day were:

  •  a hike in the hills near our house - super fun and a good way to kill some time on a nice sunny day but not something new so it didn't meet the criteria of my challenge
  • art projects and play dough - my little guy doesn't have the coordination or patience for an art project and my daughter had a art project kit meant for a much older child that she had gotten as a birthday present which means that mom does 90% of the work.  I gave play dough to Flynt and put him in his high chair and helped him play as needed while helping Wren with her art project.  Not ideal.  It was a new art project for Wren but play dough was not new for Flynt.  They did stay happy playing this way for a long time but it was a lot of work for me.
  • finger paining with shaving cream - this met all the criteria and is what we are going to be focused on today
All we needed was a window, a can of shaving cream and some food coloring (I think the food coloring was a bonus but not really required for this to be fun).  It was both a sensory experience and an art project all at once.  The one thing that made it a little bit more difficult was that our hose bib is tied to our sprinkler system and we live where it freezes and we don't have the water turned back on yet to the outside.  This made cleanup a little trickier.

I alternated between squirting shaving cream on the window, my hands and rubbing it on the window and just squirting my kids' hands.  I kept control of the food coloring at all times and only added a drop or two at a time and let the kids experiment with mixing colors.  Mostly I think they just enjoyed the feel of the shaving cream and they loved making a mess.  It started to rain a little bit while we were outside playing and eventually the lost focus and wandered off and played in the rain while I cleaned up.  Everything they were wearing went in the laundry when we went inside but I think the whole thing was a success.
